Verla Jean Wright

Verla Jean Wright entered this World June 21, 1953, and flew off with the hummingbirds September 12, 2024.

Verla was born to Geraldine Papan Hayes and Charles Jackson Sr. in Lewiston, Idaho.
Verla and her siblings grew up in the 1st Church Village old mansion where they lived and played along the creek and roamed the hillside for their early year in Nikessa, Idaho.
She attended elementary school in Kamiah, Idaho. In 1966 at the tender age of 13 she left for Cheyenne/Arapaho boarding school in Concho, Oklahoma. She was there for a short time, returning to Kamiah then she was off to Chilocco, Oklahoma near Ponca City. After returning this time she obtained her GED.

Verla was a beautiful lady that got the attention of the gentleman friends. She had friends all over including Haskell Indian College. She had two previous marriages before she met the love of her life Benjamin Wright. Verla and Ben met after she was globetrotting around Alaska with her partner in crime Cynthia Blackeagle. Verla attended Sheldon Jackson College in Alaska.

When Verla met Ben he had a young daughter, Stacey Marie. Together they had Josephine Janell Wright in 1981 and Edna Mae Wright in 1983. Together they raised their three daughters at the family home.

Verla worked various jobs around Kamiah. She worked as a security technician when the Itseyeye Casino first opened. She blessed the seniors with her famous frybread as their cook. She was blessed in that area, she made delicious, beautiful feasts when she could. She had other hobbies including making wing dresses, baby boards, weaving and miscellaneous crafts. She loved being in the cold AC with the fan on even in the winter with her hiking thongs/flip flops.

She loved traveling galivanting around to Montana, Alaska, California, Washington and sometimes wherever the wind would take her and her BFF Judy Oatman. They had many traveling stories and adventures.

Verla believed in prayer and was very powerful in her prayers. She was spoken to have had the strength and dedication that could drive evil forces away.

Verla was proceeded in death by her loving and dedicated husband Ben Wright, daughter Stacey Wright, mother Geraldine Hayes, father Charles Jackson Sr., brother Roger Jackson Sr., sister Judy Jackson, sister Ruby Jackson, nephews Charles Oatman and Alexander Cross, niece Jamie Jackson and grandnephew Desmond Oatman.

Verla is survived by her daughter Josephine Wright at the family home; daughter Edna Powaukee (Carl Sr.) in Lapwai, ID; sister Darla Jackson (Herman) in Kamiah, ID; brother Charles “Spud” Jackson Jr. at the family home; sister Carolyn Amerman in Stites, ID; grandchildren Benae (Josh) Wright of Kamiah, ID, Himiin Powaukee, Taamsas Powaukee, Faith Powaukee, Carl Ray Powaukee Jr. all of Lapwai; and Javon Wells at the Kamiah home. Her pride and joy great grandchild Benny Bashaw. Many nieces and nephews including her favorite nieces Sasheena Williams of Craigmont; Lindsey Walker and Melissa King of Lapwai. And all those that loved and knew her.

Funeral Services will be held 10:00 am Saturday, September 14, 2024, at the Nikessa Hall in East Kamiah, Idaho. Burial and dinner to immediately follow.
