Gladys was born in Ahsahka Idaho on March 3, 1937, to Thomas Peterson and Clara Contraro Peterson, she was the fourth of nine surviving children. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Marcos and their daughter LaDonna; sisters Evelyn Rios, and Bernice Antello, brothers Elmer, Phillip, Thomas Jr, and Donald. She is survived by sons Marcos aka Sluggo, Daniel, Gabriel (Loreen) Gilbert (Janet) Paul, and daughter Monique; sisters Margaret Pollock, Marion Valencia, and brother Joseph Peterson Sr. 15 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
Gladys was a member of the Nez Perce Tribe and a descendant of Chief White Bird. She was also Suquamish and the great-great-great-great-granddaughter of Chief Sealth (Seattle).
Her family moved to Tacoma where she met her husband Marcos who was stationed at Ft Lewis.
They were married in Los Angeles and 1969 moved back to Washington. She felt one of her greatest accomplishments was building their home – clearing the land, pouring the foundation, and major construction – within five years of moving back from LA.
After Marcos’ death, Gladys went to college and earned her degree in Human Services. She was a master of arts and crafting always working on projects, teaching others, and attending craft shows and bazaars. Her artistic abilities landed her a job she loved, making designer jewelry and bridal accessories. She loved soul-gospel music, and family road trips and truly enjoyed her grand and great-grandchildren.
Beginning at the Spalding Church in Idaho through the Church of the Indian Fellowship and onto Tacoma Indian Baptist Church, she had a devout Christian faith that she would share with anyone who would listen. She will be remembered as a loving, graceful, friend and parent.
