Remembering the Summer of 1877 as Told By Wilfred Scott and Darryl Wheeler

On July 15th, 2025, Nimiipuu gathered up river at Clear Creek, near Kooskia, Idaho, to commemorate the summer events that took place during the Nez Perce War of 1877.

In 1877, Looking Glass’ camp was destroyed and 700 horses were stolen, causing Looking Glass to join the other Nez Perce bands on their flight to freedom. Julia Davis Wheeler, a previous tribal council member who helped the Looking Glass’ Campsite become recognized as a National Historical Site, expressed gratitude for everyone’s attendance and she hopes for more people to come each year. “This site will not be forgotten,” she pronounced.

Around fifty people were in attendance, many of them being a part of the Looking Glass band. The microphone was open, encouraging the audience to share their backgrounds, historical knowledge, and connection to this land. Now, Nimiipuu honor many of these historical sites, such as the Looking Glass’ Campsite, to feel the presence of their ancestors. Regarding Nimiipuu ancestors, a well respected tribal elder remarked:

“As many of you felt their shouting, screaming, and crying at the sounds of scared horses, the booming of cannons, and explosions of cannon balls, at every memorial, they are there. They listen to our words; they look into your hearts; they are thanking you for remembering them and honoring them.” – Wilfred Scott

During commencements like these, not only are ancestors present, but nature as well. For a brief moment, A saq’antáayx̣ (bald eagle) soared nearby, reminding us of the connection shared to this land. In correspondence, Darryl Wheeler stated, “This Land offers healing, giving you peace of mind that comes with serenity and understanding.”
