After 18 years of dedicated service with the Nez Perce Tribe Office of Legal Counsel, Mike Lopez is beginning a new chapter in his career.
Throughout nearly two decades, Mike provided steadfast legal guidance on countless matters that supported the Tribe’s sovereignty, governance, and long-term interests. Much of his work happened behind the scenes—often unnoticed by the public—but its impact has been felt across the Tribe. His commitment required long hours, thoughtful counsel, and many sacrifices, including time away from family and friends, all in service to the Nez Perce people.
While the Nez Perce Tribe is sad to see Mike leave, we are pleased to know he will continue serving Tribal Nations in his new position with the State of Washington. His dedication to Indian Country remains unchanged, and we know he will continue making a positive difference.
For those who know Mike best, it’s impossible to say goodbye without acknowledging another passion of his—Star Wars. Whether quoting an entire scene from memory or finding the perfect line for any occasion, Mike has always reminded us that “Do. Or do not. There is no try.”
As he embarks on this new adventure, we thank Mike for his years of service, his unwavering professionalism, and his commitment to the Nez Perce Tribe. May the Force be with you, Mike—and may your next mission be as rewarding as the last.
On behalf of the Nez Perce Tribe, we wish Mike, his family, and his loved ones continued success and happiness in this new journey. You will be greatly missed.

Nez Perce Tribe employees met in the Richard Halfmoon Chambers (NPTEC Chambers) to hear our tribal leadership give thanks to Mr. Lopez for his years of service.

Former NPTEC members step forward to talk about Mr. Lopez’ earlier years with the Tribe. Above is Bill Picard discussing how OLC has transformed over the years and complimented Mr. Lopez on his work ethic and loyalty to the Tribe.

Long time co-worker, attorney Dave Cummings offers words of what it was like to work with Mr. Lopez. After giving a great speech about his work ethic and sometimes over-thinking personality, he left off with a reference to Star Wars there are 3 acts. Mr. Lopez has left the Tribe twice, therefore by his logic, there would be an Act 3 implying that one day Mr. Lopez will return.

Mr. Lopez’ wife Jennifer gave appreciation to the Tribe for being a great employer and the opportunity to become like-family.

Mr. Lopez is gifted a Pendleton blanket for his years of service. He received many parting gifts that are not shown.
