A Sacred Connection: Nimiipuu Join in Harvest of 2026 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree

October 24, 2026 | Musselshell Meadow, Idaho

On Saturday, October 24, 2026, the Nez Perce Tribe joined the U.S. Forest Service, elected officials, and community members for the ceremonial harvest of the 2026 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree from Musselshell Meadow in the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests.

The tree, an Engelmann spruce known as heslíps in nimiipuutímt, holds special meaning beyond its journey to Washington, D.C. Musselshell Meadow is a historically and culturally significant place for the Nimiipuu people. For generations, our people have gathered traditional roots in this area and baked qém’es, maintaining cultural practices and connections to the land that continue today.

The heslíps harvested on Saturday was the second tree selected for the honor after the original tree was determined to be unsuitable. Now, this tree will travel across Idaho, stopping in communities along the way before reaching the nation’s capital, where it will represent Idaho on the West Front Lawn of the U.S. Capitol.

The ceremony included remarks from Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests Supervisor Jon Word, U.S. Forest Service Chief Tom Schultz, Nez Perce Tribal Executive Committee Chairman Samuel N. Penney, Nez Perce Tribe Cultural Resources Manager Nakia Williamson, and U.S. Senator Jim Risch. A letter from U.S. Senator Mike Crapo was also read.

An important part of the gathering was the Nimiipuu blessing offered before the tree was harvested. Prayers were shared for the safety of those cutting the tree, the replenishment of the land, safe travels, and the well-being of everyone in attendance. The blessing was made especially meaningful with the presence of waaph qah qun and the Nimiipuu Flag Song.

Throughout the ceremony, speakers acknowledged and expressed appreciation for the Nez Perce Tribe’s participation. The Tribe’s presence reflected more than a partnership in the event. It recognized the Nimiipuu people’s longstanding relationship with this land, our history, and our treaty rights under the Treaty of 1855.

Although the autumn sunshine welcomed attendees, the cool October air made the warm drinks and refreshments provided by organizers especially appreciated.

The Nez Perce Tribe extends its appreciation to the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests, event organizers, speakers, and community members who gathered to recognize this occasion.
